Bisphenol A…Some Thoughts

June 11, 2008 at 8:50 pm (Uncategorized)

Bisphenol A is a chemical that is used in making some plastics. It has been linked to obesity, infertility and insulin-resistance in animals. Over the past few months there have been plastics have been removed from some stores to reduce our exposure to these plastics. On each bottle there is a recycling number from 1-7. The following numbers are bad: 3, 6 & 7 as they have harmful chemicals. Better plastics include 1, 2, 4, 5. I used this site to find my information, and there are some tips on the bottom of the page that are really helpful so you should check them out. But now, on to my story of the day…

I was filling up my Dasani water bottle today that was previously filled and thought to myself…”I wonder if I’ll get cancer because of this…or will filling this water bottle make me sick??” With all the talk about not using plastic water bottles anymore, I had to stop and think. My thought process soon turned to the fact that we are worried about getting sick from plastics so they have started to take some off the shelves, but we continue to sell cigarettes (among many other products that cause illnesses). To me this just doesn’t make sense.

I sometimes think that we get ourselves worked up over things that may not be as big as they seem. I am sure that there is probably some harm done to our body when drinking from recycled materials, but there are other things that are just as bad. Think about the air we breath everyday…probably not the cleanest. There are so many things that can cause harm, but we cannot stop a lot of these things from occurring. Of course we should be trying to prevent them which is what they are trying to do by not selling plastic bottles anymore and that is good, and it’s a step. I guess what I am trying to say is that sometimes there are things we can’t control, and they will happen no matter what. I think we need to stop worrying about so many things and start enjoying life and living it. What are you thoughts and opinions? Any?

    Hi Ashley,

I agree with you. We do tend to worry about things that are small. Recently there has been so many things linked with cancer or any other kind of negative effect both big or small. We always hear ‘don’t do that it’s not good for you, don’t eat that it’s not good for you’ and it seems like NOTHING is good for us. I find it difficult to enjoy a lot of things because we always hear some kind of negative effect that comes from it. I think that we should just all not care and live our lives or else we’d just be on guard or holding back every day.

As I type this I realize how easy it is to say or print that we should just not care but I still get scared about issues like recycled plastic, radiation from cell phones, and tanning! Good issue to bring up..

People react way too much. We have been using plastic water bottle for a long time and yes they ma be harmful toxins, but we’re still here. Our grandparents would have went through a lot more than a plastic water bottle; they hauled water from a river, used extremely harmful chemicals in the field etc. Society today over reacts about every little.

Hello! I agree with the first comment. There is always going to be some product that is being studied for its effects, especially causing disease. But I figure by all the food we eat that we shouldn’t, environmental stress and other factors, we might as well not worry about every little detail. If this chemical causes cancer don’t buy the plastic it is made with. Also, a note on cigarettes, the government makes a profit from those off the taxes…and you know even if they do cause disease, someone is making a lot of money.
